Vitens is the largest drinking water company in The Netherlands. We deliver 24/7 top quality drinking water to more than 5.7 million people and companies in The Netherlands.

Every year, Vitens produces and delivers about 350 million m³ drinking water. Together with more than 1400 employees, we extract and purify water at almost 100 production plants. We distribute this to our customers through 50.000 kilometers of water mains. As a drinking water company, we are at the center of society. Vitens depends and anticipates on developments in society, such as the drinking water demand, digitalization, the energy transition, economic growth and climate change.

Challenges

These developments in society cause several challenges. One of our main challenges is the availability of groundwater; our drinking water source. The recent hot and dry summers, caused by climate change, have led to extended periods of drought. The availability of groundwater cannot be taken for granted anymore. At the same time, an increasing drinking water demand forces us to extract even more groundwater. Not only the quantity, but also the quality is important. The groundwater quality is influenced by e.g.  increasing anthropogenic substances. Therefore, we must carefully manage and protect our groundwater extraction areas.

Because our activities also affect the environment of these areas, we always have to take all activities below and above the ground into account and invest in our relationships with stakeholders.

Another development in society is digitalization; a rapid process that offers many possibilities to optimize our reliability, resilience, supply of information and service to customers. Vitens sees opportunities for real-time monitoring of drinking water production and distribution. With data, we can improve our reaction to changes in water quality and quantity and use this in order to communicate transparently and proactively.

Furthermore, we cannot ignore national and international challenges, such as the energy transition, circular economy and sustainability. Therefore, we invest in the knowledge and resources that are necessary to render our drinking water supply sustainable.
